Little Athletics SA: Beyond Barriers Para Pathway Program
The Beyond Barriers Para Pathway Program is a completely free, inclusive athletics initiative created by Little Athletics SA to ensure that children of all abilities have the opportunity to participate, belong, and succeed. The program is designed for children aged 6–17 with a physical, intellectual, or hidden disability, providing an entry point to sport in a safe and welcoming space.
This program is proudly supported by the Heart Foundation, helping us promote active lifestyles for children of all abilities.
Hosted at the SA Athletics Stadium in Mile End, the program runs every second Saturday morning, offering families a consistent and supportive routine. Each session includes a blend of athletic activities, skill development, and social interaction, giving young athletes the chance to build confidence while learning foundational movement skills.
Participants are supported by coaches experienced in working with children with disabilities, ensuring activities are adapted and accessible for every athlete. Adding to this support, the program also features Para Ambassadors: current senior para-athletes who take part in coaching sessions, share their experiences, and inspire participants by showing what is possible in para sport.
The program focuses on developing essential athletics-based skills: run, jump and throw, which form the building blocks for broader physical development. Throwing and running frames are available for those who require them, ensuring equitable access for children with mobility needs.
At the heart of the Beyond Barriers Para Pathway Program is a commitment to creating an inclusive, fun, and community-focused environment. Children are not only learning new skills; they’re forming friendships, experiencing achievement, and enjoying the atmosphere of sport without pressure.
